Grip socks are non-slip socks with silicone tread on the sole, worn for reformer Pilates, mat Pilates, barre, hot yoga and studio fitness. This guide answers every common question in one place: what they do, whether you need them, how they should fit, what they cost, how to care for them and when to replace them — from KARVE, the reformer Pilates studio brand whose socks are worn daily across our own London and New York studios.
What are grip socks and what do they do?
A grip sock adds friction between your foot and the surface — reformer carriage, footbar, mat or studio floor — while covering the foot for hygiene. Good ones use dense, full-sole silicone tread; cheaper ones use sparse dots that leave gaps exactly where you load your weight.
Do I need them, or will regular socks do?
Regular socks are actively worse than bare feet on a reformer — smooth cotton on a moving carriage is a slip hazard. Most studios require grip socks in reformer, barre and mat classes for both safety and hygiene. If a class allows bare feet, grip socks are still the more stable and more hygienic option on shared equipment.
How should grip socks fit?
Snug everywhere, tight nowhere. The heel pocket should lock on your heel, the cuff should hold without digging in, and there should be no loose fabric under the ball of the foot — loose knit is what causes bunching and blisters. If your socks bunch mid-class, they're too big or the elastic has gone.
Which length: crew or ankle?
Grip performance is identical across KARVE lengths. Crew (£16) adds ankle coverage and warmth for slower controlled work and cooler studios; ankle (£12) runs cooler for jumpboard, dynamic classes and hot yoga.
What about hot yoga?
Hot yoga is where grip socks earn their keep fastest: sweat on a smooth floor removes traction exactly when you need it. A breathable ankle grip sock keeps your standing poses planted without overheating your feet.
How much should I pay?
£10–£18 buys genuine technical construction: full-sole tread, arch band, bonded grip. Below that you're usually getting dot grip that peels; above £20 you're mostly paying for fashion. Full breakdown in our UK price guide.
How do I wash them?
Cold wash inside out, air dry, never tumble dry, never use fabric softener — softener coats the silicone and makes it slippery. Cared for properly, a quality pair lasts about a year of weekly classes. Full routine in our care guide.
When should I replace them?
When the tread wears smooth under the ball of the foot, the grip edges start lifting, or the cuff no longer holds. Rotating two or three pairs extends the life of each.
